We are sadden to inform you about the passing of the musician best known for founding and directing the world-famous South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Joseph Shabalala passed away today, Tuesday February 11 at a hospital in Pretoria. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was founded in 1964 by Joseph Shabalala, a musician who hoped to bring new interpretations to traditional Zulu music. Shabalala also led the group to international acclaim in the Grammy award-winning group achievement with their hit “Homeless”. The group also won 5 Grammys, having racked up 17 nominations.
We can believe in the power that our heritage has in promulgating rich South African identity and promoting the notion that variety is a national asset opposed to igniting conflict.
May his gift of music forever remain to inspire us. On behalf of the National Arts Council, we send warmest condolences to his family and all those moved by his music.
