The Men Against Gender-Based Violence: National Awareness Project is in Quest to Stop the Social ill of Gender-Based Violence

Theatre has the power to address pressing social issues, and focusing on critical social ills such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV) serves a critical role in raising awareness, challenging societal norms, and fostering meaningful conversations to stop the alarming increase of cases related to these issues.

Funded by the National Arts Council, through the Presidential Stimulus Programmes (PESP4), Men Against GBV: National Awareness initiative aimed to create a series of plays, dance pieces, and artistic installations that creatively explore the topic of GBV. The works were designed to present men’s perspectives, thoughts, and engagement on the issue, providing a platform for open dialogue. By encouraging men to openly discuss GBV without fear of judgment, the initiative sought to dismantle stigmas, inspire accountability, and foster a deeper understanding of this pervasive issue in South Africa.

The artistic expressions, debates, and conversations took place primarily in the Eastern Cape, with pop-up performances in the North-West and Gauteng provinces, ensuring broader outreach and impact.

The plays and performances on GBV highlighted the underlying societal structures that perpetuate gender inequality, including patriarchy, misogyny, and the objectification of women. By weaving these themes into powerful storytelling, the initiative broke the silence surrounding GBV, enabling men and the broader community to confront and discuss issues related to the abuse of women and children. Through theatre, participants and audiences were emotionally engaged, allowing for a deeper connection to the issues being addressed. Theatre as a medium evokes strong emotions and fosters critical reflection, creating lasting impressions that inspire action and change.

By raising awareness and facilitating dialogue, the initiative not only educated communities but also empowered individuals to challenge harmful norms and contribute to a culture of accountability and respect.
