My fellow South Africans, distinguished artists, and valued stakeholders:
It’s a privilege to address you as the newly appointed Chairperson of the National Arts Council (NAC). I stand here with a simple, yet profound conviction: our creativity is the most valuable resource we possess. Whether expressed on stage, on canvas, in music, or through digital media, artistry at its core captures and celebrates our shared humanity. A single painting can be worth millions—not because of its raw materials, but because creativity itself holds immeasurable worth.
Many of you already know that if we truly want the world to grasp the richness of South African culture, we must give the same high regard to those who bring it to life. The field of behavioural economics teach us how our perceptions and biases shape the value we place on things—including art. When society places an elevated significance on the arts, it encourages creativity, cultivates talent, and expands opportunities for artists everywhere.
But let’s be absolutely clear: the NAC isn’t just here to distribute funding. We’re also here to actively champion the extraordinary wellspring of imagination rooted in our communities. We want to break any misconception that the NAC is merely a conduit for money. Indeed, our purpose is to bring to life meaningful projects, experiences, and environments that reinforce the truth: the most effective way to preserve and amplify South African culture is to invest in those who express it.
Art forms the backbone of our national heritage. Our painters, sculptors, dancers, poets, and musicians are, in fact, the architects of our country’s identity. You’ll see evidence of this in how fiercely nations worldwide seek to raise the profile (and the prices) of their own cultural creations. It’s about the underlying story—how much societies believe in the depth, uniqueness, and irreplaceable nature of their own art.
Artisans are valuable beyond measure, and their work makes our intangible cultural identity startlingly real. As Chairperson, my mission is to ensure that no musician, poet, dancer, or visual artist feels unsupported. I urge every South African—whether you’re a business owner, community builder, educator, or simply a lover of the arts—to join hands with us in this journey. Together, let’s move beyond words and bring about a reality where creativity is nurtured, valued, and projected to the world with confidence and pride.
Because when we invest in art, we invest in our spirit, our heritage, and our future. Thank you for your support. I look forward to the many transformative projects we’ll cultivate, celebrate, and share in the months and years to come.
Eugene Botha
