The Xitsonga Visual Arts Exhibition & Training Project launched a dynamic intervention in the Limpopo province, and its surrounding communities to address a long-standing barrier of formal training, professional exhibition spaces and mainstream art markets for rural creatives.
Conceptualised by renowned crafter and visual artist Amos Baloyi. Funded by the National Arts Council under the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), this multi-layered initiative merged skills development, mentorship, and entrepreneurship to bring rural Xitsonga artistic expression into the spotlight. The project equipped 45 young people with practical skills to navigate the creative economy.
Throughout the programme, participants immersed themselves in drawing, painting, craft-making, and foundational business skills. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, emerging creatives built professional portfolios, shifting their mindsets from casual hobbyists to professionals. This intergenerational knowledge transfer ensured that traditional Xitsonga artistic practices are preserved while adapting to modern realities.
The project concluded with artworks installed for an exhibition at Masingita Mall. Bringing fine art into a bustling commercial environment shattered the geographical obstacles that typically isolate local artists. The public showcase featured live painting sessions, art sales, and direct community engagement, placing these creatives squarely in front of new audiences and potential buyers.
This initiative delivered far more than a temporary gallery display; by fostering a sustainable network of artists and stakeholders, it established a permanent foundation for local economic development. Moreover, it demonstrated that Limpopo’s cultural heritage can be actively preserved while serving as a continuous source of income.
