Craftopia launched a digital skills-transfer programme in the Free State province, utilising online workshops and physical material deliveries to provide the youth with specialised pottery and woodwork training. This initiative was aimed at empoweringrural youth, foster sustainable practices, and unlock entrepreneurial opportunities within the rapidly growing creative economy.
By bridging the digital divide and providing critical resources, Craftopia transformed the youth from passive consumers of cultural media into active, innovative creators. Through hands-on mentorship and immersive training, participants gained the tools necessary to turn raw talent into viable economic pathways.
Funded by the National Arts Council under the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), commenced by visiting three local community arts centres to recruit enthusiastic young people. To ensure financial constraints did not hinder anyone, the organisers then couriered comprehensive packages containing all necessary raw materials and tools directly to the homes of the participants.
The core training unfolded over 4 days incorporating both pottery and woodwork workshops. Through three-hour online sessions that featured live practical demonstrations, fundamental design principles, and guided interactive learning. In addition, the participants and instructors demonstrated their commitment by consulting outside of formal hours to complete the projects unlocked future entrepreneurial potential in the creative economy.
The programme concluded by laying the strategic groundwork for an upcoming physical exhibition in Qwaqwa, where these emerging artists will have the opportunity to showcase their completed designs to the public, collectors, and industry stakeholders. This approach doesn’t just nurture practical and technical skills but strengthened community connections and instilled a sense of local pride. By blending digital literacy with traditional craftsmanship, the project established a resilient framework for long-term development.
