COUNCIL RESUMES THE EXERCISE OF ITS STATUTORY FUNCTIONS

For immediate release:                                                       7 August 2026

Following an order of the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Pretoria, granted on 31 July 2026, the members of the Council of the National Arts Council were reinstated to office. The Council has resumed the exercise of the functions conferred on it by the National Arts Council Act 56 of 1997.

The order operates on an interim basis, pending the final determination of the review proceedings between the parties. Those proceedings have not been concluded, and it would not be appropriate to comment on them.

The National Arts Council, as an institution, continued to operate throughout the period in question and its services to the sector were maintained. What has changed is that the Council, as the institution’s governing body, has resumed the functions that the Act reserves to it.

Council records its appreciation to the employees of the National Arts Council for their work during this period.

Any further communication will be made in the ordinary course.

Ends.
