A groundbreaking project transformed Bloemfontein’s theatrical landscape by proving the magic of live performance can be universally shared. The Inclusive Theatre for Young Audiences utilised South African Sign Language (SASL), expressive movement, and vivid visual storytelling to communicate profound meaning entirely beyond words. By intentionally performing Dimpho and the Catfish, they enabled children and adults that are deaf or verbally impaired to experience and deeply connect with the show.
By seamlessly blending theatre, sign language, and rich visual imagery, the production stripped away conventional communication barriers to create a shared, uninhibited experience for all audiences. Funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) through the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), they explored critical, contemporary social themes in an imaginative yet highly relatable way. Audiences were guided through stories tackling social media, safety, and family connection in a fast-paced society.
The true strength of Inclusive Theatre for Young Audiences lay in its simplicity and unique ability to spark meaningful conversations within the community. This project changed how theatre for young audiences is created, developed, and presented across South Africa. It directly promoted authentic inclusion by granting artistic access to communities and individuals who are all too often left out of live cultural experiences.
