The BATHU Gumboots Dance Festival elevated a century-old cultural tradition into a powerful platform for social change by staging an inclusive performance initiative that placed women, youth, and people with disabilities at the centre of the stage. This historic event took place across several communities in South Africa, bringing together performers from Klerksdorp, Mahikeng, Bloemhof, and Vryburg to reclaim a dance originally created by mineworkers.
Gumboots dance holds a unique place in South Africa’s cultural history. Developed by miners who used the sounds of their rubber boots, clapping, and body movements to navigate isolation and hardship, the dance evolved from a practical survival tool into a profound artistic expression. Today, different communities interpret this heritage through their own lenses, with Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, and Tswana performers bringing distinctive regional rhythms and movements to the art form.
To ensure local ownership, the project team engaged artists, media organisations, and community structures. The event featured crafters, volunteers, live showcases, presentations, and exhibition and technical production and hospitality vendors, generating tangible economic opportunities across multiple sectors. By incorporating live-streaming and professional camera operations, the festival successfully expanded its reach to online audiences far beyond the physical venue.
At its heart, BATHU challenged traditional perceptions of carrying cultural narratives forward. By actively encouraging women to use gumboots dance for self-expression and collaboration, the festival proved that heritage can be preserved without remaining static.
Funded by the National Arts Council under the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), the project transformed a historic cultural language into a contemporary platform for empowerment, reminding us that traditions thrive when new generations are given the tools to claim, reinterpret, and make them their own.
