Crafting Connections launched a practical, grassroots initiative to combat unemployment and poverty by transforming traditional arts into viable livelihoods. The programme partnered directly with non-profit organisations (NPOs), their staff, and communities to transfer income-generating craft skills. This approach created employment for the trainers while teaching participants authentic trades like basket weaving, intricate beadwork, sewing, wood carving, and pottery.
Funded by the National Arts Council under the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP), this project unfolded directly on the ground within the rural heartlands of the Limpopo province. By focusing on these specific geographic regions, the project targeted the exact communities that needed economic stimulation the most, turning remote villages into vibrant hubs of creative production.
Crafting Connections was driven by a deep mission to build lasting, self-generated sustainability and move communities away from a reliance on finite donations. The initiative specifically empowered women and youth, who formed the backbone of the rural economy. In addition, to ensure these new businesses thrived, the initiative bridged the gap to the modern market by equipping groups with easy-to-use digital catalogues and human-centred branding campaigns that shared the unique stories of each crafter.
