This year we need to take some brave steps forward. When people are afraid to make mistakes, they can get into a state of paralysis with the result being very little progress. If people are willing to “fall forward”, then we can work together and achieve impressive results.
Botsotso is a group of artists, poets and writers whose goal is to create art and to generate a means for its public communication. The collective has published more than 30 books, the majority of them funded by the National Arts Council (NAC).
Underpinning the Knysna Literary Festival, the Garden Route’s premier literary event, is the ethos that the local community should benefit from the educational and cultural benefits and economic opportunities the festival brings.
Bulwer Park in Durban is adjacent to the KwaZulu-Natal Society of the Arts (KZNSA) Gallery, one of the province’s most important arts venues. The park recently became an art destination in own right and is now home to a large mixed media sculpture of a vulturine fish eagle (also referred to as a palm nut vulture) that soars above the park’s treetops.
Many arts organisations in South Africa battle with support, lack of funding and sufficient business or management skills to retain financial viability. To address the growing needs of the arts sector, Business and Art South Africa (BASA), with the support of the National Arts Council (NAC), have launched an extensive and ambitious education programme comprising a mentorship programme, capacity building workshops, a basics programme and the BASA Boardbank.
