Rest in peace Hugh Masekela

Today we mourn the passing of legendary trumpeter, composer and activist, Hugh Masekela. We at the National Arts Council send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Bra Hugh was more than a great entertainer. He was one of the pioneers of jazz music in this country and globally. His music was in part inspired by the turmoil that South Africa went through during apartheid and he used it as a weapon to spread political change. He may no longer be among us, but his contributions to the music industry and our democracy will live forever in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.

Please look out for further communications regarding the memorial service and funeral arrangements.
